Last night I volunteered to work a casino. Here, where I live, not for profit organizations work 2 days at casinos, every couple of years, to raise money for their programs. Schools do them, community leagues, and other various organizations throughout the city. I’ve worked about 3 or 4 of them before, I think all for schools. The work isn’t particularly difficult, but having enough people to fill the spots is important, as there are licensing regulations and if you fail to meet the requirements you risk losing your license and casinos are a huge source of revenue for these groups.
So I arrived at 6 pm and was finished around 2:30 am, allowing me to rest my head at 3:00 am. I woke at 6:30 to drive my husband into work, and then came home and went pack to sleep until 9:30 am. I may be a night owl, but staying up until 3 am and only being asleep for a few hours, is exhausting! I was happy I could get in the extra hours of sleep.
A friend of mine volunteered to work it as well. The night was pretty slow to be honest, but it gave my friend and I a lot of time to chat about life and what is going on with us. We originally met through the alternative school program our children attended, and though we both have moved on from the program, we became friends through that avenue and have stayed in contact throughout changes in our lives. We don’t necessarily get to see each other that often, as we are both quite busy, but I’ve always felt that she is just so completely lovely, and I always really appreciate when we have an opportunity to connect.
